MENTAL HEALTH

Good mental health is a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem. It allows us to fully enjoy and appreciate our life, other people, and our environment. Unfortunately, one in five Australians will suffer from a mental illness in any given year. If you feel that you, a family member or a friend may be suffering from mental illness, please make an appointment to discuss with one of our GPs.

FAQs

What is a Mental Illness?

Mental illness is a general term for conditions of the mind, that affect the way a person thinks, feels and acts. These illnesses include bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety and personality disorders. The exact cause of mental illness is unknown, but it is not a character fault, weakness or something inherently ‘wrong’ with a person. Some conditions are inherited and associated with disordered brain function or chemistry.

How can I get help for my Mental Health?

A doctor can provide treatment or can refer you to a specialist or psychologist for extra help. Effective treatments are available and early identification and care can reduce harm and improve quality of life. If you are uncertain or nervous about speaking to a GP, take a friend or family member with you.
